What oh What Happened to the Watermelon?!?

All Summer I have been truly excited for the ultimate fruit that I planted in my garden, watermelon! However that all changed when I got home from work last week Friday. I went to check out the garden when I came across a patch filled with wilted watermelon vines. I had no idea what happened, but knew that there has to be something to do... I mean I was looking so very forward to enjoying a nice piece of home grown watermelon.

I am trying to figure out what happened, because I swear the previous day they were beautiful. If anyone has some insight on what I did wrong I would love to know so I don't do the same mistake again next year.

Compost Creation

Reduce, reuse, recycle. These 3 words have been ingrained into our heads since anyone can remember, so why isn't the majority following what has been preached?
It's so easy to go to the store buy the food we want and eat what we buy, however the final stage of disposal is when the level of initiative falls. To dispose of the left overs or yard clippings into one container would be the solution. Luckily there is an answer... a Composter! In 5 easy steps you too can have an Original Composter at home!
  1. You need a container. Either build one or buy an inexpensive one; however it's highly recommended that you build one out of recycled materials.
  2. Build it as BIG/ small as desired. Make sure that there are ventilation holes on each side for proper decomposition to take place.
  3. Alternate layers. It's imperative to alternate between layers of browns (carbon-rich materials) and greens (nitrogen-rich materials). If your compost doesn't have a 50/50 ratio the decomposition process will take slower and may even produce an odor.
  4. Up-Keep is very important. Make sure that every week you toss your compost. Making sure that the process is moving at the pace you'd like and controlling the odor produced by the compost. Also, make sure that your compost stay wet so the best results will be achieved.
  5. ENJOY! Within 3-6 when the compost turns black and has an "earthly" smell to it, you are ready to reap the benefits of your labor.
Attached you will find a link from Better Homes & Gardens going through the step-by-step process of creating a basic compost. See every litter bit helps!

The Miracle in Miracle Grow

What really makes gardens grow? Well let me tell you the secret... it's "Miracle-Gro" All Purpose Plant Food. This little box of plant food made my garden look like it was taken care of by a dedicated professional. My vegetables grew into monstrous plants producing massive tomatoes, a plethora of peppers, and colossal kohlrabi; however it's not as easy as buying a box of plant food and calling it a day.
I needed to make a trip to Stein's Gardens and Gifts and pick up a Garden Feeder, a Connector hose, along with a water faucet timer also. After I hooked the hoses and feeder together, I added the feed and let the water rip. Within 20 minutes I was taking care of my garden just like the pros do. For the remainder of the summer I have followed this regime at least 3 times , and suggest you do it also for a successful garden.
  • Empty an 8oz packet of Plant Food into the Feeder.
  • Adjust hose in garden to be at the base of all plants.
  • Turn the water on and let it rip for about 20- 25 minutes.
  • Repeat at least 3 times weekly.
